Oh, I think you're on to something, Amanda.  The cloak used to belong 
to James.  We know from PoA that MWPP played at least one joke on 
Snape, and they probably played a lot more than one.  Some of these 
undoubtedly involved the cloak.  Also, when Snape find the cloak 
outside the Willow in PoA, he instantly connects it with Harry.

So after all these years, Snape is still paranoid and thinks he's 
still being spied upon, like the old days.  I like it!
