I don't know about the connection with Columbus, but I do recall
reading that there was an industry connection between Radcliffe's
parents and higher-ups in the movie's production group.
However, I gathered that Columbus et al picked out Radcliffe
initially, and JKR later stated that seeing a tape of Radcliffe was
like meeting her long lost son, but that regardless of connections
his parents were extremely wary of letting him be in the movie. It
sounded like if connections came into play, it had more to do with
being acquainted enough with the senior Radcliffes enough to be able
to approach them and say "please? We reeeeeeally want him to try for
this part."
And for the record, I can't actually see where any comparison between
Daniel Radcliffe and Tori Spelling is valid at all. Specifically,
Radcliffe *can* act. Going from "Radcliffe's parents are in the
industry" to "oooh, Radcliffe only got the part because of daddy's
connections even though he can't act, how Tori Spelling of him" ~
that's a leap worthy of the late great Evel Knieval! :-P
