I agree that knitting-in pictures is hard. I can't change colors 
without leaving big holes. Maybe Molly embroidered the pictures and 
letters onto the fronts, rather than knitting them in. In the usual 
cop-out, this is all from Harry's POV and Harry wouldn't know 
whether it was knitted in or embroidered unless he made a point 
of looking inside the sweater.
