I just wanted to add my humble opinion to the discussion:
I can't see, why it is so important that Daniel's eyes should be green.
Of course, in the book one of Harry's main features are his incredible green
eyes. And of course I would have loved to see an actor with huge, expressive
green eyes in the film as well.
But when casting an actor for a film, the most important aspect should be
his ability to act the part and not to have the perfect look. I guess I
would not have enjoyed the film as much if they would have found a boy with
perfectly green eyes and incredibly unruly hair but without any acting talent.
When first watching the movie, I didn't even react to the different eye
colour. I was just concentrating on how he was acting, how he impersonified
Harry as a character. And in this field, I was totally happy with Daniel's
performance. I can't imagine any other actor in this role now.
And I guess that after they found out that Daniel wasn't able to work with
contacts, they decided to rather give a natural impression of a talented
young actor with expressive eyes, than to alter the colour technically and
lose some of his acting quality.
