Hi listies!
As far as I know (means: I read it somewhere but I don't remember the URL),
originally they intended to equip Daniel with *green* contact lenses, so the
color would follow canon. They actually made some photos with him wearing
them.
But it turned out that Daniel didn't take well to the lenses, he had a lot
of troubles with them. So, instead of forcing a minor into discomfort and
possible eye damage, they let go of this plan. They probably thought fans
would not notice or care so much. In fact, I can understand and even support
the decision not to force contact lenses onto a child if it doesn't get
along with it. We do know the color of his eyes and why torture him?
As to why they didn't color his eyes on the finished film? I guess, though
the special effects people can do tremendous things, recoloring his eyes in
every take, from every different angle so they would look *natural* (and not
like some kind of red glowing like in Bram Stroker's Dracula) would have
been both to expensive and to complicated.
JKR confirmed that the eye color was very important and I am sure that it is
the fact that it is (rather rare) color green will be important. Either they
hope that Daniel will get along with them better when he is older or they
plan to hire a new actor sometimes before that crucial revelation. Even if
they keep apart from canon on this one however, I believe the kids health
still takes precedence, so I am willing to use my imagination.
Greetings,
Ethanol
