bboy_mn finally gets it:

Ok, after reading your response and the others, I think I understand
what you mean. In a sense, you are asking, 'Is there something
critical about the color green, or is the critical factor that the
color match his mothers? Alternately, is it related to some abstact
feature of his mother's eyes?'

Definitely, there is something in common about their eyes, but the
color may be incidental to the book. JKR may have simply chosen green
because it is an uncommon color, and the true 'value' of the eyes is
related to the ability to do magic, or whatever. I'm pretty sure I'm
on the right track here.

But, as I said when I originally responded, I don't think in matters
right now. I do think it matter and they shouldn't ignore it
completely, it just doesn't matter at the moment. In most of the shots
in the movie, you aren't focusing on his eyes and even if you were the
shot isn't clear enough to make a distinction. Others pointed out that
in a few key very close up face shots, the eyes were somewhat green.

This leads me back to what I said before, I think they can worry about
it later when it becomes critical to the plot. At that time, they can
go with the green contacts or the CGI and incorperate it into the movie.

Personally, I think it will be important for them to be GREEN when the
time comes in order to be consistent with the book. The color green is
very much emphasized in the book. Although, I still say the movie can
blow it off, until the movies in which it is a critical factor.
