I think he just blasts him backwards, he'snot THAT clever.  After all he was prompted to use the snake spell by Severus. 

I know canon has Lockhart bested comprehensively by Severus Snape, which has me in fits of laughter.  Much as it goes against my upbringing to laugh at the suffering of others the tumble is quite spectacular and I wonder if it was enhanced with special effects or simply a stunt man.

  I know I'm a bit late on this, but in the first trailer doesn't 
  Malfoy make Harry do a backwards cartwheel during the duelling club 
  scene?  It was hard for me to tell since I was watching it on my 
  computer and my Internet service is fairly lousy.  But if it is, I'm 
  going to be really upset, since Malfoy lacks the talent to do such a 
  thing to Harry, and this most certainly is *not* in the text!
