Odile again:

Erm, that's interesting. Indeed, Gifu can be
interpreted in that way, although its traditional
sense is one of exchange - "...a gift demands a
gift..." as it says in the Havamal - hence the X
shape, where the two lines are of equal length.

However, I have never known Algiz to be interpreted in
that way; I have never seen it associated with the
Animal Kingdom. Where did you find that reference?

And what stumps me is that yes, these two runes are in
his *prisoner ID*, i.e., the folks at *Azkaban*
assigned them to Sirius - why would they use runes
with positive connotations? It's not like they would
be obscure to the Wizards and Witches of the
Potterverse.

I haven't caught any... just passing references in the
books. Unless you want to revisit the old debate as
to the shape of Harry's scar: Eiwaz? Or Sowulo? in
which case you might want to have a look at messages
81951 and 81960 over at the Harry Potter for GrownUps
archive. ^_^
