I think that is the key to really enjoying a movie based on a book. I read an interview with the producer of a movie based on a book, and he said something that I very much agree with.
If you ever have the choice of watching the movie or reading the book first (which, obviously is not the case for this movie for anyone on this list) then watch the movie first. The movie cannot help but be a condenced version of the book. So, when you watch the movie first, then read the book, you're going from a smaller scale to a larger scale, and can find both enjoyable. If you read the book first, then watch the movie, you're going the other way, from a larger scale to a smaller scale, and the movie is therefor less satisfying.
This is the reason that I will not read Return of the King until after I have seen the movie. I don't mind the changes made in the Two Towers. But I probably would have minded if I had gone into it with expectations from the book.
