Does anybody know what current law is regarding
copying music CDs, software, and home movies?

Copying is against the law, period. I'm a professional artist and writer,
and copyright law is something I pay close attention to. You cannot legally
copy anything without written permission of the person or corporation who
holds the copyright. That includes for home use. If you pay attention to the
FBI warning at the front of your DVDs or VHSs, they include a statement saying
this film is for private home viewing only, not for public performance or
display. So the law includes how the film is shown, not just copying.
Licensing is a big deal -- licensing is what happens when you pay a fee to get
permission to play someone else's song in your band, for instance, or to use
someone else's photo as the basis for a painting (I'm a sculptor, not a painter,
and I take my own photos the vast majority of the time -- I never reproduce a
photo exactly, but if I need to use a professional photo to get a different
angle than the reference shots I have from my own library, I will pay for that
permission if required.)
And on the thievery - how the heck do these idjits who buy pirated DVD's
think they're going to keep their players in good shape when they're using
pirated stuff? You don't know how that DVD's been treated before you shove it
into your player (or computer!! gulp!!). You're taking money away from the
production company that delivers us our Harry Potter movies -- if you're doing
this, STOP IT! I hope everyone involved in such activities gets busted.
Disney prosecutes to the max when they catch DVD pirates. I imagine WB will be
just as diligent.
