Hello all,
I just rewatched the POA DVD again over the weekend (twice) and I
paid especial attention to the scenes we have been discussing:
1st the Bridge scene and his comments on Lily. I think this one is
the more vague of the two scenes. He does seem to care for Lily when
he mentions her but I don't know if it was just appreciative that she
was there for him or actual love in a romantic way. I would hesitate
to think he would think of her that way knowing his loyalty to his
friends and knowing that James fancied Lily. I tend to think Lily was
the only one still being friendly when the mistrust was going around.
Afterall, Sirius and James apparently thought Remus was the spy. How
awful that must have been for him. Anyway, I do believe this scene
forshadows something in the 6th or 7th book (one of the things JKR
mentioned) but I think it was that Lily believed Remus to be innocent
and was always kind to him not that he was in love with her.
2nd the scene where Remus says goodbye...I listened to this scene
several times during one of my viewings and have come to the
conclusion. Remus is referring only to being a werewolf NOT
insinuating that he is gay. He specifically states that "someone let
slip the nature of my condition and parents would not want someone
like me teaching their children". So he means the werewolf part. I
now feel that Alfonso meant his comment about the gay uncle to be an
analogy to 'don't ask don't tell' type of mentality. You really don't
talk about the gay uncle and who would talk about having a werewolf
in the family. Personally, I think that mentality is silly but it
exist. We have a lady here where I work that I once said she and her
girlfriend were coming to a party and someone said I shouldn't
mention the girlfriend because 'we don't talk about those things at
work'. I told him to bug off that I was trying to get an accurate
headcount and didn't care if she was bringing a wookie as her date, I
needed the list.
I still don't get the style of Remus' clothes or the record player
(thought muggle devices didn't work in Hogwarts). Maybe he buys his
clothes at a thrift store and he can get those really cheap. I find
that style more silly and not significant of sexual preferrence.
