Yes, I think Rickman has a coldness in the way he plays the role that really
comes off as I would picture Snape. We'll see in the new movie, because in
the shrieking shack scene, there are moments in the book, when Snape shrieks
and yells and such thing. Hard to picture Alan Rickman shrieking!

I completely agree! However, I saw the first movie before reading any of
thebooks, so I wonder what those who had an image of Snape beforehand
thought of
him (anyone care to share?).

Well, to be honest, what I envisioned the book Snape as in looks is a lot
closer to how they made up Brad Dorif for his role as Grima Wormtongue in
LOTR...in fact, thats almost exactly how I pictured book Snape (although I
have to admit, I did give mine eyebrows...lol).
I *do* like Rickman as Snape (we won't go into drooling fangirl reasons
though...those can speak for themselves), but I know a lot of people think
Rickmans plays him too...um...'soft'....and that's where I disagree.
Although Rickman doesn't look like book Snape, he has the attitude and the
poise down perfectly IMHO....although he may not seem as 'over the top' as
book Snape, I think that's actaully a good thing---Lockhart *should* be over
the top, by comparison--that's a major part of the character in whole.
Everything about Lockhart is a glaring act, and he suppsoed to get
noticed...
But Snape is meant to be more...unknown and shadowy, cruel, hard to read,
yadda yadda yadda...
Point is, if Rickman took that act over the top in the movie, Snape would be
nothing more than a cariacture--and a goofy one at that (yes, an actor can
be *so* snarky and mean that he actaully come across as 'goofy'' and
something to laugh at instead of feeling trepadation when the character
makes an appearance. Take, the Sheriff of Nottingham for instance--also
played by Rickman. THAT character operates at about the same emotional level
as book Snape....and as I recall, I laughed more than cringed at
him...*g*...)...sometimes, in the movies, less is more...
