Jen, you left out the earliest reference to time in PoA that I can recall,
when Marge's beads hit the cuckoo clock and the bird kept coming out and
cuckooing (even getting hit once, IIRC), LOL!
I'm not a film expert by any means, but I noticed the time stuff myself.
Time is a recurring theme in the film shown in many ways. Cuaron mentioned it
as something he thought was important. So Harry being under the covers in
the beginning was a metaphor for what young teen boys do under the covers (not
studying Lumos spells, that's for sure), showing the passage of time and
Harry growing up a bit. Then there's the cuckoo, and the frequent bouts of
ticking clocks we can hear in the background (mostly during the Time Turner
sequence, IIRC). We see the clock tower (which didn't exist in previous films nor
in the books) fairly often. We're reminded that Buckbeak will be executed at
sundown, and the kids race to get there on time to be with Hagrid. We're
shown that stupid Whomping Willow sequence eating the bird or dropping its
leaves over and over to show the passing seasons. Hedwig flying to Hogwarts in a
snowstorm after Lupin says he'll work with Harry after the holidays is
another example (and what part of "once a month" does Cuaron not get - Lupin
wouldn't need weeks to recover from his time as a werewolf or he'd NEVER be
functional!!)
There are loads more examples - I think the Minister of Magic looked at his
pocketwatch at one point. Harry's room is over a train station, of all
things, so he has the comings and goings of trains on a regular basis to deal with
(with the shaking room and all that - totally non-canon).
I haven't even watched PoA in ages, yet these are examples I can think of
off the top of my head. I think the numerous
"time" things are put in there partly to keep suspense going, partly to give
a feeling of "not enough time" and things rushing ahead toward an uncertain
destiny. After all, Harry's a KID and yet he has to deal with Voldemort. He
doesn't have "enough time" to grow up and become a mature, trained wizard
before dealing with the monster. So there's that aspect, as well.
Just some rambling thoughts here. Nothing like what Richard would do. Too
bad he got so huffy.
