Hi, Jam! (We're old friends from another Yahoo list :-)
Alla and others are obliquely referring to a discussion on the
main HPFGU list regarding changed patronuses (patronii?). Since
JKR often uses foreshadowing in the books, many of us have assumed
Tonks's briefly mentioned changed patronus in HBP foreshadows
a changed patronus in DH, one which will have more impact on the
plot. Two theories have been that Harry might have a new patronus
reflecting his status as Dumbledore's Man, or that Snape might
have a new patronus reflecting his status as Dumbledore's Man
(should he turn out to have "killed" Dumbledore on Dumbledore's
orders, meaning he's DDM--Dumbledore'orders, meaning he's DDM--Dumb
evil--or OFH--out for himself). The latter has been a pet theory
of mine and others, since it might give a DDM!Snape a way to
communicate information to the Order. (And JKR did decline to
name Snape's patronus in an interview, saying it would "give
away too much.")
Anyway, it did come as a surprise to many of us that Ginny's
patronus is a phoenix, because a phoenix patronus at this
moment (as of HBP) would seem to reflect Dumbledore or Fawkes
as a protector, and it seems that Ginny as a Weasley might have
some other symbol of protection. Though the theory advanced that
Ginny's experience in COS could have influenced her to see Fawkes
as a protector is a viable one, I suppose.
As for Ginny being a Mary Sue character, I know some on the main
list again see her emergence as a strong character and as Harry's
love interest as coming somewhat out of the blue. Though I do
think there were clues to her talents as a witch and a Quidditch
player in earlier books for some those clues were apparently
a little too subtle. Thus the feeling that she's Mary Sueish.

Hi, Julie!
OK. Since I haven't had time to follow the main list too closely, I can see
that I missed a lot of references that would have helped.
Thanks for the assistance. I guess I don't have much more to add,
then--except, I hope all the speculation doesn't lead to disappointment because of
inflated expectations.
I'd rather like seeing what the movie people could do with creating a
phoenix patronus, too. I'm a visual person, and the image sounds like it could be
lovely. The symbolism doesn't bother me at all, if it's a reference to Fawkes
saving Harry in CoS, and foreshadows Harry's triumph over Voldemort!
