Hi, I'm new here

Sorry I've been so long in saying "Hi" - just too many irons in the
fire, as usual. . .

I'm a *HUGE* Dan fan. He IS Harry Potter! And he's quite capable of
doing other work, as well (he's a stitch in "Extras," which will be
on HBO Jan. 28 here in the US - if you're easily offended, don't
watch it, but that cheeky, risque humor is very common in England,
and Dan does a marvelous job).

I think Rupert is fabulous as Ron - perfect casting - and he's a good
actor. Emma is too pretty to be Hermione, although she does the
bossy thing well. Hermione is supposed to have bushy hair all the
way up to the Yule Ball, so her putting her hair up truly transforms
her. Emma just looked a bit prettier (not her fault at all). The
screenwriter (Steve Kloves) actually put me off Hermione pretty badly
because of the favoritism he ADMITS he shows her (again, not Emma's
fault). He's said she's his favorite character and when he needs to
do an "info dump" he gives the lines to her - he also gives her way
too many of Harry's and Ron's lines, grrrrr. I'm hoping the new
screenwriter they have for OoP will be wiser in his choices, although
Kloves didn't show quite so much favoritism for Hermione in GoF,
thank goodness!!

I think Dan made a brave and wise choice in auditioning for Equus -
he wasn't GIVEN the part, he *earned* it, auditioning against many
other actors, according to an interview of the director. The
director made no bones about the fact that film and theater acting
are very different and Dan would have a large learning curve, but
that she knew he was up to it because he truly *won* the audition.
That one nude scene is necessary to the play, if you've ever seen it,
and the part itself is truly harrowing. I hope he doesn't "take his
character home" the way some actors do, but keeps his normally
cheerful demeanor when he's offstage! But he's apparently been good
about leaving Harry in the studio and being himself elsewhere, so
playing Alan Strang shouldn't bother him too much once he gets past
the nerves that must be involved in such a job.

By doing this play, as well as "My Son Jack" and "December Boys,"
Dan's ensuring that directors will take him as a serious actor, not
as "that kid who plays Harry Potter." If they can't see anything but
Harry in him, he'll be one of those child stars who never works after
becoming an adult. He's too talented for that. One article I read
called him "the next Christian Bale" - Bale, if you don't know, went
from being a 13 year old in a Steven Spielburg move (can't think of
the title right now - look Christian Bale up on IMDB.com to get the
info) to being a major international star, playing character roles
and leading man roles both in the UK and in the US. Dan has the same
quality - he'll be able to play both leading man roles and character
roles (and action hero roles as well, since he's good at doing his
own stunts), which will give him a career with "legs" (one that lasts
a lifetime, like Sean Connery's). And in the UK, he's considered an
adult at the age of 17, so he's not doing anything "underage."

I own all the books both in hardcover and on CD and LOVE them (well,
HBP isn't really to my liking in spots, but oh well), and have all
the DVDs as well. Looking forward to getting the HD DVDs once we get
a HD DVD player. GoF is my favorite book and film, although I loved
the way they made Harry's hair messy in PoA - it was different and
nice-looking as well as messy, which I thought was a nice
accomplishment.

I'm nearly 57, live in Ohio, and am a sculptor and a writer. Glad
you're here, Charlotte!

joined the group. I live in Canada. I have all the Harry Potter books
and DVDs, a (unauthorized) biography of JK Rowling and a couple
posters. And we've got some interesting Potter-hype into the new year-
Daniel Radcliffe starring in Equus, the title for the new book has
been announced, and there's some buzz about the Order/Phoenix movie
coming out in July 2007.
