Anne Squires:
I noticed that in the film version of GoF all of the exchange students
from Durmstrang are male and all of the students from Beauxbatons are
female. This implies that the makeup the student body of each school
mirrors this; the film implies that each school is single sex.
Whereas in the book this is not the case; there are both male and
female student representatives from both schools. Maybe it's just me;
but, this is one of the things about the film that bugged me. I
didn't have a major problem with it mind you; but it was, I suppose, a
minor irritation.
I think what bugged me was the idea that if you accept the film
version of the schools, then French wizards would have to go somewhere
else for their wizarding education. Possibly these young men would
have to leave their country in order to obtain an education. (Yes, I
realize that many of Hogwarts' students have to leave their country as
well; but they are still in Great Britain). And German, Scandinavian,
Russian (whatever, because I really don't know where Durmstrang is)
witches would not be accepted at Durmstrang. These young ladies would
have to go where? Beauxbatons? If German/Russian witches are already
attending Beauxbatons, and French wizards are already attending
Durmstrang, then these schools are already working toward
international magical cooperation.
On the other hand, one of the points of the Triwizard Tournament was
inclusion and cooperation between all wizard kind. To me it goes
against this theme if someone is not allowed to attend a particular
school based on their sex.
I know I just contradicted myself. My point is that I don't think
it's fair for the schools to be single sex.
I guess my main problem with what the film did was that it just plain
and simple wasn't canon.
Did anyone else have a problem with the depiction of the student
bodies of these schools in the film? (No pun intended)
