I think it's a hint that Hermione is paying attention to Ron and that
she has a sort of mothering instinct. At the same time, we can see why
Ron would start off thinking of her as nothing more than an annoying
busybody.
Carol, who suspects that the moment is intended to reveal character
(both Ron's and Hermione's) since it has no significance to the plot
