I got my first manual typewriter from my grandfather as soon as I could sit
at a table. In my high school yearbook's baby page, there's a picture of me,
at 18 months, sitting pounding the keys of the blue smith-corona. I am very
cute ;)
I had, and used, electrical typewriters all through elementary school, and
was later told by my 2nd grade teacher, when she became friends with my
parents, that she was stunned when I handed in a 5 paragraph composition on
the senses, perfectly typed (back in the days before spell-checkers) from
this little 7 year old.
I got my first desktop computer for my 12th birthday, in January, 1983 - an
Ace 1000 (Apple-compatible) and began typing everything for school. I
retyped my notes, and most importantly, I typed all my compositions. I got
in trouble, over the course of that year, in English class, for not creating
rough drafts of my compositions. Eventually, I determined that printing out
an un-spell-checked version would suffice for a rough draft.
I have not created rough drafts since.
All through high school, college and law school, I typed everything. In law
school, 1992, I got my first laptop, and I began typing in classes - and my
essay exams. I was so unused to writing that I had to train for the bar exam
by practicing my handwriting.
And now, all my writing is on a computer. I can't think to put words
together when I have a pen in hand, for anything more than notes.
I think in QWERTY.
And I am teaching my 21 month old son about the wonders of the keyboard. He
likes his brightly coloured TOMY one!
