Simon indicated a Scottish meaning of "fug" - being some sort of high-
smelling grass cuttings.
<snipped fascinating details>
Longman's says: "Fug [informal] - The stuffy atmosphere of a poorly
ventilated space."
Collins' Concise says: "Fug [Chiefly British] - A hot, stale or
suffocating atmosphere."
Roget's Thesaurus lists "fuggy" alongside "stale, airless, musty,
fusty, frowsty, frowzy...smoky, stuffy, suffocating, foul, noisome,
noxious, sulphurous, mephitic & miasmic."
I thought I should let you know! ;-)
