The connection to fog was mentioned in both the dictionary definitions of
fug I quoted earlier, although in the one I have here, it says 'origin
unknown' and aligns it more with stuffiness.  I said it was a variant of
fog, not that it was a word for fog (there is something of the smell and
temperature in the meaning - fog would not suggest that to me).

Merriam-Webster online says this:

Main Entry: (1)fug
Pronunciation: 'f&g
Function: noun
Etymology: perhaps alteration of (1)fog
Date: 1888
: the stuffy atmosphere of a poorly ventilated space; also : a stuffy or
malodorous emanation
