Well, I'm obviously not Amy, but... ;}

I adore Phillip Pullman.  I don't always agree with where he decides to take 
the plot and characters, but his stories are so thoroughly engrossing and 
brilliant that I can't help but love them anyway.  If you're looking for 
something more complex, I suggest picking up a copy of "The Golden Compass," 
the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy.

He's also written several books intended for younger readers..."I Was a 
Rat," though not nearly as enthralling as his trilogy, is very funny and 
enjoyable.  I also liked "The Firework Maker's Daughter."
