I explained to David off list that the state of public transportation 
in the US is such that your astonishment is not astonishing.  The 
concept of a train actually stopping more than a couple of times a 
day at any town smaller than New York City . . . Wow!

I give you words of wisdom from a friend of mine who was in India 
with me and indulged in bhang (a form of marijuana that you eat)--
replace "Varanasi" with "London" and "eating bhang" with "drinking a 
few pints" and you'll get a good piece of advice.

When in Varanasi,
After eating bhang,
Remember to look RIGHT
Before crossing the street.
