Oop! Sorry, I missed that.  I read it because Ruth got it out of the 
library for James.  He liked it too.

Yes, I didn't realise it was the first of three until I checked the 
author's name on Amazon UK.  There are certainly some unexplained 
things in the first book (James said: they don't need explaining, 
they just are!).

I sense the Christian (or possibly CS Lewis) influence in the nature 
of the evil of that world - that everyone is held in subjection 
through meritocracy based on examinations. (Shadowlands is about 
Lewis.)
