OK, I am not defending the BBC, but you do have to bear in mind that they
think thatthese kind of remarks will entertain the average British sports
jock. You also have to bear in mind that the music comparison probably has
to do with the successful use of pop music to fill in between times during
the Commonwealth Games. I think those Games showed the world just how we
have to do things at big sporting events to attract interest. They worked
well and we should be proud of them .
I'm not entirely sure that's true since there's no direct comparison between
entertainment *inside* the stadium and entertainment in the area where food
and stuff is sold - and I'm not entirely sure how many sports jocks actually
watch BBCNews24 at any time let alone mid afternoon on a weekday... I
understand that they think these comments are funny and entertaining but
that's no excuse, an organization as respected as the BBC should know better
- although News24 does have a tendency to be a little amateurish at times.
I will say though that having sat through this afternoon's shambles I'm
beginning to think that nice as the Bavarians are they have no idea how to
organize a major sporting event - it's not like they haven't done it in the
past so how they could have made so many screw ups in so short a time is
beyond me. A certain phrase involving piss ups and breweries is coming to
mind!
Someone please send the German Athletics people a rule book for goodness
sake!
