I'm so happy people responded!  I was feeling embarrassed at my post 
when no one said anything for a few days.  Incidentally, I finished 
all three books in about two days - just couldn't put them down.

I like those suggestions.  I see Ron's daemon as an iguana or a 
chameleon.  They can both ride on your shoulder (like a good sidekick) 
and are deceptive: chameleons in appearance and iguanas are 
surprisingly moody.  I saw one whip its tail at the glass case it was 
in and it made me jump.

Hermione could definitely be some sort of hunting bird.  I still see 
the lion/panther/tiger possibility.

Harry's could be a mare (those are female, right?).  His daemon would 
be beautiful but strong, fast and kind.  That's my Harry!
