Unleash every smile in your arsenal, for today is a beautiful day.
Forced to wake up early for an appointment, I left the academic
squalor of my apartment and drove onto campus, marvelling at the
morning light reflecting off brick and white paint. There was a
superb rainbow across the dull western sky, promise of more cold rain
later. It was only when I slipped the car into a nice spot and
climbed out that I noticed the pale second rainbow outside the first.
A double rainbow. Church bells began to ring nearby. Naturally I
redeployed every crude word in every language I know to celebrate the
absolute brilliance of the occasion, when it was already topped by a
column of honking geese flying toward the sunrise.
So far so good. Then: while watching the geese make their way over
the parking lot, I saw two other geese, just two, flying close and
silent in exactly the opposite direction. Confusion in migratory
patterns? Global warming? Scientists messing with the Earth's
magnetic field? Ozone layer? Petrol fumes? Did I forget to brush my
teeth this morning?
Actually, the first thought was this: "Oh look, there's Harry and Ron
breaking away from the pack to go rescue Hermione from the troll!"
