I own and enjoyed Sarum. The author is called Edward Rutherfurd. 
But, I just read a review of London on Amazon.co.UK which suggested 
that you should only read one or the other as they are actually very 
similar. "In London, he has a short stubby person build a catherdral 
and guess what? In Sarum, he has a short stubby person build 
Stonehenge. Augh" A reader.

I love historical novels, and my favourite series is about a Roman 
informer called Marcus Didius Falco by Lindsey Davis. Still, if it's 
non-fiction you're after, I'd second Christopher Hill.
