I didn't like 'The Da Vinci Code' at all, really. I thought that all
the Da Vinci theories that Dan Brown worked into the books ended up
having no impact whatsover on the actual series of events the
characters followed. It was like he was telling the story of some
people solving a code, and he just wanted to insert a whole lot of
backstory that never had any immediate influence on solving the code
at hand. After all, the characters solved Jaques' codes, and just
spoke about Da Vinci's.

I do find the whole backstory about Da Vinci and the Priori
interesting, however. I think I would enjoy reading a non-fiction
book about it better. The story besides the historical backstory was
very flimsy and very cliched, IMO.
