I recommend the Miles Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold. The 
setting is standard science fiction, but even if this genre is not 
your cup of tea (or the opposite - you prefer your SF very original) 
don't worry. The main strength of the series is in the plot, the 
character development and the humor. As in HP, you get to follow the 
main characters in their life through many books, get to know them 
very well and getting very attached to them. There are some books 
that I reread just for fun, and HP and MV are among them. Start 
from "Shards of Honor" (nowadays sometimes included in "Cordelia's 
Honor") and continue from there. You have enough books in the series 
for many months of enjoyable reading.
