snazzzybird pops out of lurkdom to say --

My son just got his Israeli driver's license a little over a week
ago. He's 24 and moved to Israel from the midwestern US, so he'd
already been driving for 9 years -- the last few of them in
Chicago! He was still required to take at least one lesson, and
then it was at the instructor's discretion whether to clear him to
take the test or require further lessons. To Firstborn's relief,
his instructor cleared him after the second lesson. He'd already
gotten a physical and an eye exam and presented that paperwork, and
passed the written test. When he took the driving test, he was
pretty sure he'd done okay, but still worried about it while he
waited for the results. That was another surprise: in the US they
tell you immediately whether you passed or failed, but he had to
wait five hours to find out. As he put it, it was an "intense" five
hours!
