For what it's worth, we've had discussions about Eragon in the past,
if you search for that word in this group, I think you'll find that
the response to the book has been very favorable.
I'm sure when you get the books, you WILL NOT be disappointed. Many
people have said that JKR is not the best writer, but that she is a
Master Storyteller, and the same is true for Christopher Paolini; he
is a master of his domain. His knowledge of history and his use of
language are supurb; well fleshed out believable endearing characters,
vividly descriptive language, deep detailed knowledge of his subject,
and a master of the captivating epic tale. Never a dull moment.
As long as we are on the subject of language, these are hardly
children's books, NOT IN THE SLIGHTEST have they been 'dumbed down',
nor has the language been reduce or simplified in anyway to a child's,
teen's , or young adults level. That is one of the most appealing
aspects of the books. The language is demanding but not distracting.
Further, because the Elves, Urgals, Humans, and Dwarfs all have
different language, Paolini has had to invent three complete languages
(humans speak English). The 'ancient' language is based on the ancient
Norse language. Where a 15 year-old boy in the middle of Montana came
up with a reference to the ancient Nordic language is anyone's guess
but apparently he did.
I can't imagine that anyone would not be captivated and entranced by
Paolini's masterfull telling of such an exciting epic tale. I was so
captivated I simply could not put the book down. I read myself to
exhaustion each night, then began reading again the next morning. I
simply had to know what happened next. Now that I've finished it, I've
begun a more leasurely second read.
You may not rate it as one of the best books you've ever read;
afteral, that's a matter of personal taste, but you will NEVER be
sorry you bought and read this series of books.
Like Rowling's books, these stories are so masterfully constructed and
told, that they aren't simply a few days entertainment, these are
books that you will read again and again over your life and each read
with enrich you life more. Now THAT is the measure of a Master
Storyteller.
Just a few thoughts.
