Snake - Snape

This morning while driving to work the radio program was about people
who had nicknames they didn't know about. One lady called in saying
that at her office there were 4 men who very obviously had their own
agendas. She said they called them Snake 1, Snake 2, Snake 3, and
Snake 4 (behind their backs) . . .
This got me to wondering if someone is known as a "snake" if they have
their own agenda? (Like someone might be known as a rat if they give
unknown information on people.)
I am really hoping for a DDM!Snape, but I'm considering evidence that
might not be what JKR has in mind. Snake and Snape are such similar
words . . . and "Severus" makes me think of "severing" bonds with
people.
Has anyone ever heard "snake" used in the way this lady was using it?
This term makes me think right away of OFH!Snape . . . which would be
sort of a disappointment to me.
