That's interesting, Lee.  With JAWS--that's my screen reading program, for
all the sighted people on the list--I can supposedly turn off punctuation
being spoken at all on a temporary basis.  but when I did this some very
weird things happened, a nd I had to do a repair on the program and almost
had to reinstall it.  I think it must have gotten confused by the conflict
with my normal punctuation settings.  grin.  

Oh, well, thank goodness, there are so many ways to read Harry Potter, and
it's fan fiction!

I found Sherry's description of what happens when using a screen-reader
interesting.  I don't have problems with the apostrophe ('), but I do have a
horrid problem with the "Smart Quotes" formatting as what happens in
Microsoft Word under normal circumstances.  Suffice it to say that I turn
off *All* formatting, especially the bloody "Smart Quotes." I'd rather have
real apostrophes and standard quote (") marks which read far better.

One thing that happens with the formatted "smart quotes" is that, in the
case of a word which should have an apostrophe such as "don't," the word
ends up being pronounced "don t."  A possessive like "Lee's" would be
pronounced "Lee s."  Gaaah!

Some of these things I can write exceptions for, but the formatted "Smart
Quotes"...Not!  If any Window-Eyes users out there have a trick for
excepting the formatted quotes, write me off list--Please! :-)

Anyway, this is merely an informational thing.  <Grin>
