I've had one root canal done - actually as a result of some of the 
bullying I received at school - some absolute... deleted... all but 
killed one of my teeth.

I was terrified at the thought of a root canal - but in actual 
fact, I was surprised that it didn't hurt at all. It was a bit 
uncomfortable having to hold my mouth open all that time while 
someone had their hands and various stools in there - but it really 
didn't hurt.

I don't how common my experience is - but I can tell you that it's 
at least possible for root canals to be painless.
