Also "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by Irving.

As for children's books, I was disappointed by "A Series of
Unfortunate Events" just like kemper mentor. On the main list
somebody mentioned two books by author T.H. White, which are in the
same genre as HP, "The Sword in the Stone" and the "Once and Future
King."

I've also wanted to read "The Little White Horse" by Elizabeth
Goudge, which was JKR's favorite book as a girl.

Truthfully, I don't expect to find another children's series that
lives up to HP. Not that there aren't other great books out there,
but HP appeared at a certain time in my life and means something to
me which can't be duplicated.

As for adult books, I'm never disappointed by a trio of women
authors: Barbara Kingsolver, Lynne Sharon Schwartz and Sarah Bird.

Pure escapism? Check out the "Shopaholic" series by Sophie Kinsella.
Especially if you feel like you have spending problems ;).
