I'm with you on that as well. If someone shoved a camera in my face in the
early hours of the morning after I'd been out partying I'd hit them too -
and I don't have the added benefit of a couple of Special Branch Officers
who would probably take it personally if the photographer tried to
retaliate. In fact if I recall Harry had a girl with him and was trying to
keep the photographer from getting pics of her - I think this almost counts
as chivalry, rather than a misdemeanour.
I have no problem with the press intruding on the privacy of someone who is
committing a crime. I'll even give them a pass on chasing down politicians
whose actions in private (an affair or whatever) are in direct contrast to
their public pronouncements i.e. if you're making policy statements on
single mothers (and how they're responsible for all societal woes, which is
one of the key hobbyhorses for politicians wanting to get into the papers)
while getting your secretary pregnant you're fair game. Other than that I
think people deserve privacy. Frankly I don't care if Harry wants to spend
his spare time goose-stepping around Highgrove wearing a leather trench coat
and effecting a limp or if Tony Blair wants to dress up as Maggie Thatcher
on his days off (ugh - can I blame the medications I'm on for those fairly
freaky mental images?).
And I say again this was front page news (to the exclusion of everything
else in most cases) on the day the photos became public - seriously did
*nothing* else newsworthy happen in the world in the preceding 24 hours?
