I used to wonder the same thing about slavery in the U.S. I'm from
Kentucky, where the answer to the abolition question was answered
closer to 50-50 for/against than most places. I finally decided I
couldn't know, because I have no choice but to see the issue from a
historical perspective where the answer is clear. All I can do is
hope, and remember the question when an opportunity to do the right
thing in current context is presented.
If Harry were a child of mine, I'd be deeply disappointed in his
choice, and wondering where I dropped the ball. At the least I'd be
wondering where he got the idea that Hitler et al were something to
be taken lightly.
