I went to a Borders here in England and was sorry I did. I preordered there because they said they would have a party starting at 10 and going until 2. They didn't - good thing I didn't show up until 11:20 or so. About 10 minutes before midnight someone came around with a quiz for the kids (which looked to be the same one they gave out for OOP as it had a question about the names of the the 4 books currently out and not given to adults unless they asked for it) and a bucket of penny candy (gummy worms and such). That was about it. There were no numbers, I asked when I came in, you just got in line, better for me but worse for the others who came earlier expecting a party. I also thought it wasn't fair to those who preordered as it appears that many were in the back of the line as they had been told there would be separate lines and they figured they'd get theirs quickly. I went and got all the items I was intending to buy that night and got in line. They were also offering a
20% discount on any book you bought as long as you pre-ordered. What they neglected to say was they were no longer honoring the 20% discount after midnight - you had to buy your books before then. I'm assuming they wanted the cashier line to go quickly with people only buying the one book at midnight but there should have been something to that effect on the coupon or even posted when you came in the door. It is possible that some were told by the people greeting at the door but as I didn't have a child with me, I was ignored when I came it. So, in my case, they lost out on over £100 in sales as I left all that I was going to buy, even those things not covered by the 20% at the cash register, such as the HP doll and flashlight for my daughter. I only left with HBP. I got my special bag only because I complained loudly about it. Apparently, the bag was intended only for the kids. Seeing as this was the only promotional item available, I wanted it. I think that's what
bothered me the most, that adults were dismissed as nothing more than a wallet. In fact, when I came in I said hello to one of the greeters who turned away from me to greet a teen coming in the door behind me.
I was very disappointed with Borders here but that may have been due to my wonderful experiences with Borders in the US. Since I'll probably still be here when the 7th book comes out, I think I'll not preorder and just run over to ASDA or Woolworths who both had the books available at midnight and cheaper as well.
