I second The Princess Diaries (Meg Cabot) and the Artemis Fowl books (Eoin 
Colfer - sure about the spelling ;-) ).

Other great books:
Susan Cooper - The Dark Is Rising series
Catherine Clement - Theo's Voyage
Enid Blyton's series (epecially for girls)
the other Lois Lowry books
 I might think of other books as the hours pass and can send you the titles 
later on :-)
