Hi,

Here's a few of my personal favorites, either as a kid or even now!

Anne of green gables
by L. M. Montgomery
I'd say all ages on those

little house series
by Laura Ingalls wilder
all ages.

witch of blackbird pond
Elizabeth George Speare
maybe middle school age level, like 11 and up. Historical fiction

black stallion
Walter farley
this is a whole series

princess diaries
Meg Cabot
Probably about 11 and up too. Hilarious. the whole series is!

lioness quartet
Tamora Pierce
About a girl who wants to become a knight and how she accomplishes this goal

The velveteen rabbit
Unfortunately, i don't know the author of this, but it's one of the greatest
stories of all time, in my opinion anyway.

secret garden

the railway children
E. Nesbitt

Johnny Tremain

phantom toll booth

the school story
Andrew Clemens

follow my leader
James Garfield
Not sure if this is available anymore. It's the story of a boy who goes
blind at age 11, learns braille, the use of a white cane and other
techniques of functioning with blindness. then due to special family
circumstances, he is allowed to get a guide dog, even though he is well
below the age limit. it's the story that inspired me when I was a little
girl and made me say, I'm going to get one of those someday!

a girl of the Limberlost
Gene Stratton Porter

Old Yeller

mary Poppins

Dr. Doolittle

Subject: [HPFGU-OTChatter] Book list

My apologies to anybody who sees this more than once - I'm asking it
quite widely.

As many people reading this will know I am currently studying to be a

teacher - I'm in the third year of my fourth year course. I am coming

under increasing pressure to specialise as a literacy teacher (I am
also coming under pressure to specialise as a numeracy or science
teacher, but in those cases, it's mostly just because relatively
primary school teachers have specialist skills in those areas, and I
really don't want to do them, just because I'm good at them - the
literacy interests me most). Specialising in one way or another
greatly increases my chances of working specifically in gifted
education (especially as I have so far achieved First Class Honours
in all the gifted related subjects).

Anyway - to my point. As part of my goal of possible eventual
literacy specialisation, I have started collecting children's books
across a range of areas. I've spent the last few days cataloguing my
'teaching collection' of children's books and I have put up a list
at:

http://www.alphalink.com.au/~drednort/bookindex.html

I hope my eventual collection will be much larger than this - but
it's already reasonably sizeable. It consists mostly of fiction, with

some non-fiction and not every book on the list is actually
technically a children's book - it also includes some books I think
at least some children would enjoy reading, even if they are
technically for adults.

I would like to ask as many people as possible to please look over
this list and if you can think of a book that you think should be on
it, that isn't, please let me know. If there's a book from your own
childhood, you think really should be available to children now,
*please* let me know about it. If there's a book you would want your
child exposed to, *please* let me know about it. If there's a book
you think every teacher should have available to give to children to
read, *please* let me know.

I still have a year and a half to collect these books before I'm
actually teaching.
