The English translation I most recently read included some French. I
couldn't say whether it was all of the French dialogue which should
have been there, though, or just a little to suggest the Russian
aristocrats of the time spoke French and considered this very
sophisticated of themselves. Unfortunately it was a library book, so
I could not tell you what edition, who the translator was, etc.
But I agree it should be handled the same way it appears to have been
handled in the Russian edition you read (with translations of the
French in footnotes for those readers who do not read French.)
I wonder how this is handled in French translations...
