I'd say you're correct here. Compare the pronunciation of
Animagus" in the films: Roughly An-ih-MAY-guss (accent on the third
syllable). For the plural, ask yourself how you would pronounce "Magi"
as in "Gift of the Magi," and there's your answer. (I pronounce it
"MAY-jie," with two long vowels and a soft "g," even though I use a
hard "g" for "magus" [MAY-guss]).
BTW, did anyone notice in the GoF film that Karkaroff pronounced
"Cruciatus" as "Crew-see-AY-tus" and Neville pronounced it
"Crew-see-A-tuss" (short "a" as in "cat")? Karkaroff's sounded more
British to me somehow, even though he's presumably supposed to be a
Hogwarts-educated Russian. Neville's sounded almost American (almost
like my pronunciation of the word).
Since these aren't real words, I guess it doesn't matter, but it's fun
to talk about.
