Oooh, I second that recommendation.  Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is 
an amazing book -- whilst reading it you have to keep reminding 
yourself that it is, in fact, not *actual* history!

Recently, I have read Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea series, which I enjoyed 
a lot, although they aren't really my style (not enough 
characterization, especially in the first couple books).  Her prose is 
absolutely beautiful, though, and I highly recommend her to anyone who 
is interested in fantasy novels.

Laura (who is supposed to be writing an essay on crown-magnate 
relations in late medieval Scotland right now.  *sigh*)
