Try Lois McMaster Bujold. She has 3 series out, each very different from the others, although in some cases, calling them series is misleading. All share a great sense of humor (even in the most unlikely of circumstances), nice use of language, and interesting ideas, with interesting characters.

The earliest set is the Vorkosigan saga. It centers around Cordelia Naismith and Aral Vorkosigan in the first 2 books, then on Miles Vorkosigan for most of the rest. These are space opera/science fiction, rather than fantasy, but they are character driven, and much more varied than the genre might suggest. She once described her technique for plotting these as "What's the worst thing that can happen to these characters?". The series basically follows Miles as he grows up from 18 to just over 30.

The second series is fantasy, set in an alternate history where religion (all 5 gods worth) is very real, and the gods take an active, if indirect, part in the story. The Curse of Chalion is the first book, Paladin of Souls is the second, and The Hallowed Hunt is third. The 3rd one is only loosely linked to the first 2.

The third series just started in October, with The Sharing Knife: Beguilement. This is volume one of a duology; the second volume The Sharing Knife: Legacy, is due out about the middle of next year, with another loosely linked duology out in the following 2 years. This is fantasy set in North America, or some place very like it.

Caroline Stevermer and Patricia Wrede have a series of 3 books out about an alternate universe England where magic is real. Sorcery and Cecelia is the first of the series, The Grand Tour is the second, and The Mislaid Magician is the most recent. These are fun reads, fairly short.

Patricia Wrede also has a series called The Enchanted Forest Chronicles which are great fun. Think dragons and princesses, but neither of them conforming to stereotype. Dealing with Dragons / Searching for Dragons / Calling on Dragons / Talking to Dragons are some of them.(can't get Yahoo to drop the link coloring, though there is no link there.) Her other books are also good.

It's a varied selection - hopefully you might enjoy one or more of them.
