It just isn't the kind of thing I like to read. To me, they have more of a
sci-fi feel to them than fantasy. I hate sci-fi, and, quite frankly, fantasy is
not something I normally read. I read mostly non-fiction, and the fiction I do
read is authors like Austen, Bronte, Dickens, Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen,
Anne Perry and the likes. I wound up reading Harry Potter for two reasons. I
belong to a Nancy Drew list and on that list we are allowed to discuss any and
all childrens/adolescents series books. When HP first came out, and with each
subsequent book, the list members just went on and on about how good they
were. Since I love the Worst Witch series of books and HP was so highly
recommended I bought the first three books in 1999. I did not get around to reading SS
until December 2004, and the rest is history. My brother is a big LOTR fan and
has the entire series, but despite so many people telling me how good they are
and that if I like HP I will like LOTR I just simply am not interested in
them. Reading and then re-rereading HP in the past two years has put me way
behind in my *regular* reading. I have close to 50 books sitting around my
apartment, and there are more that I want to get, that I haven't read yet and want to
read, so I am not going to waste my time reading something I am not interested
in.
