Argus Pyrites Writes:
Hello all!! I'm absolutely new to HP4GU, and HP4GU OTC (Though far
from a new HP fan) -- so I figured why not start things off with an
inflamatory thread?
If you go Mrs. Rowling's website at jkrowling.com and click on the
clip portkey that takes you to the fansites, then decide you want to
visit the first website that won the coveted J.K. Rowling Fan Site
Award -- well, then you click on the link that takes you to
Immeritus.
Everything is fine so far, so what is my point? Well, there you are
at Immeritus. You spot a link named "Fandom Glossary". You only know
so much about Fanfics, so are curious. You click. A large type
warning in red states "THIS GLOSSARY CONTAINS GRAPHIC ADULT
CONTENT". Even more curious, you proceed. Say you click on :F:
Fanon
Feedback
Flame
Felching
Femmeslash
Frottage
First Time
Fluff
Umm... I won't define these, as several of them are *quite* rude.
Now I got here quite easily in a few clicks from Mrs. Rowlings site.
Then I imagined my 11 year old daughter (who is *almost* as big a HP
fan as I am) doing what I just did. I am *not* ready to discuss
Felching with my 11 year old!
I believe firmly in freedom of speech and freedom of expression. I
am not shocked or surprised at these terms, or that they are being
used in Fanfics regarding Harry Potter. My point is, that while the
Adult Content fanfic at Immeritus seems well protected, this
glossary is listed on the homepage.
I've written Immeritus, who seemed very understanding, but said it
was low priority for them. I've written Christopher Little Agency
lawyers, who said they would look in to it. This was a while ago.
So, it boils down to this. Am I overreacting? It deeply bothers me
that children might be running across this sort of information
directly off Mrs. Rowlings site. If I am, I'll shut up and leave it
alone. If not, then I think perhaps a few more e-mails might be in
order...
Thanks, Argus
