Rather than quoting previous posts on this thread, which would just take too
long, I will tell my story of how I became a Potter fanatic. I did not have
a computer back when the series started. Like Carol I heard about the books
by word of mouth. I bought the first three books back in 1999, put them on the
book shelf, and that is where they stayed, untouched, until December 2004
when, depressed as I always am at the holidays since my husband passed away, I
decided I needed to read something light that would raise my spirits. I
looked over at the bookcase and there sat the Harry Potter books. I started
reading SS and I was hooked. I finished the three I had by New Year's and bought
the other two where I work and quickly devoured them too. Well, not OOP - I had
a hard time getting through that one, and it is still my least favorite. It
was also in Dec. 2004 that I saw the movie SS for the first time when it
aired on ABC Family Channel. I didn't even know until 2004 that the books had
been made into movies. I bought all three of the DVD's. I didn't get my first
computer until the end of 2005 when I was given an old Windows 95. So the
Internet played no part at all in my involvement with Harry Potter. The series
was six books and four movies in before I even had a computer. I was told about
HPfGU by a member of the Anne Perry group I belong to, and I will forever be
grateful to her. The Internet is not responsible for me becoming an absolute
fanatic about HP but it has put me in contact with people who share my Potter
passion that I can discuss it with. I would have gone crazy the last two
years without the groups as we were waiting for this glorious month.
