Here is the thing, these kids are all approaching or
over age 18, so they are adults able to make their own
decisions. Dan will be 18 this year, Ron is older than
Dan, and Tom is older than both of them.
Certainly the parents opinions matter, but it seems as
if these kids have already chosen and have been acting
for some time. Dan started at age 9 in 'David
Copperfield'. Tom started in commercials when he was
age 8.
Now if Tom wants to go off and study Fisheries
Management, more power too him. But, as I said, he could
secure his life as a professional fisherman, more easily
with the money and security of acting, assuming he does
well, and he certainly seems to have the potential.
Indications are that Rupert wants to continue in the
acting field, so he is not being pushed by his
parents, and if he wants to go off and become a bank
manager, then again, more power too him. But if he
wants to continue in performing, then he has to work at
it. Everyday a new crop of starry eyed kids steps forward
trying to make it in show biz. Rupert has a head start,
but he can't run on his Harry Potter reputation forwever.
I guess my main complaint is that the Harry Potter movies
are not really a showcase for anyone's talent. They need
deeper more diverse roles, if they plan to be a success
at it.
The reason I think Stand-up Comedy would be good for
Rupert is because, he does well on the screen, but not
so well in person. He does't interview well. Partly,
I believe, because he doesn't realize that an interview
is a performance. He comes on as the shy quiet country
boy Rupert Grint, when he should enter the interview
as Rupert-the Entertainer.
People don't realize that most, or at least many,
comedians are very shy and soft spoken. Their time on
the stage is a time to assume an alter ego. Take Eddie
Murphy. Believe it or not, this loud obnoxious
overbearing comedian is very shy and reserved in his
personal life. I think this is true of a lot of
performers. Being shy in real life, they are able to
assume a role of a more outgoing person on stage. Ron
needs that if he is to succeed.
So, I think Rupert, even if he only approaches comedy
as a lark, will improve his stage presence and
confidence tremendously.
My central point is the Rupert needs to find a nitch in
the entertainment industry that helps define him as a
performer. Dan now has great credibility as a Stage
Actor, after Harry Potter, if nothing else, he can get
parts in stage plays on the West End and earn a
reasonable living, and keep a reasonably postive
public profile. Rupert can't follow Dan, he has to
make his own way. Though I think some stage acting
workshops or small productions would go a long way
toward improving him as an actor.
I think Stand-up Comedy, even if Rupert doesn't see
it as a career, would give in a postive public profile
and overcome his shy nature on stage.
It was just a thought that struck me.
