I wish we got books at our store, but we're strictly
DVDs and video games. I'd love to have my hands on the
book before the general public.
Mind you, when it comes to DVDs, we get them the week
before they're released to the public. One of the best
job perks at Blockbuster is having 10 free rentals per
week and getting to take home everything that's coming
out the following week. It's not a job requirement
that we preview the upcoming titles, but I tend to
look at it that way myself. I've been at our store for
2 1/2 years and there are a lot of regular customers
who rely on my for informed advice on what to rent.
I'm also the only staff member who will make an effort
to watch as many of the foreign and independent films
as possible. Everyone will watch the big films, so
when we have a lot of small titles I tend to skip some
of the big ones, knowing someone on staff will watch
those.
We have a number of film students who frequent our
store, too, so there's a certain amount of
satisfaction in being able to answer questions like,
"Do you have any Norwegian films?". :)
I wonder if anyone here on OTC works at a bookstore
and can tell us if they have the same kind of job perk
- access to titles before they're released?
