I worked in bookstores for 7 years back in the 90's, and I can't
imagine it has changed much.
My experience was that very occasionally one of the buyers would
receive an advanced copy of a book (not a real copy, it had special
binding and could not be sold) in order to read it and get the
customers excited for the release.
Most often though, the perk to working there was that you could
reserve your copy and then stand over the box as it was being opened
and get your hands on a copy of whatever you wanted the moment it
arrived in the store. However, your grabbing a copy would take place
about 10 minutes before the book was put out for general consumption
by the public.
I worked at a big independent(not a chain) so I'm sure rules and
experienecs vary. There were fabulous other perks, such as a
generous discount, opportunity to borrow and read books (without
hurting then of course) and then bring them back, and the ability to
special order things very easily. But early copies were a rare treat
and I'm sure do not exist for HP!
